greener pastures 28 Appaloosa Journal December 2018 Cartwright M Maxine Coffield 1929-2018 axine Coffield Cartwright, 88, of Watha passed gently from her earthly life Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at her home where she has been lovingly cared for by her caregivers, Marie Kea, Barbara Walker and Natashia Rhodes as well as Felicia and the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She was born December 15, 1929 in Elizabeth City to Mil- ton Coffield and Willie Ward Coffield Stafford. In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, C. D. Cartwright; son, William Dean Cartwright; and step-father, Lee Stafford. Maxine is survived by her son, C. Dawson Cartwright, Jr. (Janet); daughter, Jackie C. Barnhill (Roy); grandchildren, Allison Autry and Daniel Cartwright (Nina); and many extended family and friends. Also remembered is Maxine's faithful ca- nine companion, Ruby, that recently passed. She was a faithful member of Watha Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church where she remained active until her health declined. Among Maxine's many accomplishments, none suited her more than her accolades in the horse world. She and CD were among the first to breed and show Appaloosa horses in North Carolina. She was instrumental in chartering the NC Appaloosa and the Tarheel Appaloosa Horse Clubs. She served in almost every capacity possible in both clubs for many years. Maxine was also an active member of the Appaloosa Horse Club and the Greater Eastern Appaloosa Regional Horse Club and served on numerous committees. She worked closely with leaders of these clubs to promote the Appaloosa breed and traveled the United States promoting the breed she loved so well. Maxine, CD and Jackie were responsible for breeding and showing many state, regional, and national champion Appaloosa horses. Maxine was on the NC State Fair horse show committee repre- senting the Appaloosa division for many years and was mem- ber of the NC Horse Council representing all horses in the state. Maxine, along with CD, were inducted into the NC State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame. She was instrumental in the develop- ment and distribution of PN Nutrition, a supplement for the de- veloping and growing horse. Her passion was seeing the results of using the supplement in her customers' horses. Maxine was an absolute connoisseur of the horse world. So many people sought her opinion on a horse before purchasing or sending to a trainer. She was trusted and admired by all for her knowledge, her frankness, and her fairness in evaluating horses. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
